Although this is a tiny ski area, it is an incredible place to learn to ski and snowboard. Al Quaal is also wonderful for families as it is considered a safe environment for children.
There are only twenty skiable acres at Al Quaal. They not only have downhill but cross country skiing too. The big deal is that no areas are off limits. Even though there are only two trails, there are no off limit areas. So, it is acceptable to ski fresh powder there without having to worry about the ski patrol coming after you.
The two trails are each serviced by a tow rope. There is one beginner trail and the other is an intermediate run. The off piste areas are better suited for advanced level skiers and boarders.
Al Quaal does not have any type of ski school. The locals are always happy to help and give advice to newcomers in the sport. This is pretty much a local ski area.
There is minimal local lodging in Ishpeming but in the surrounding areas, there is a wider variety of hotels from which to choose. Fast food is available but for true après ski fun, skiers and boarders must travel a bit.
If you are in the area and are not an expert skier, Al Quaal could be a great place to spend the day. The lines are minimal as it is basically a local resort.
