Cortina’s main claim to fame is the hosting of the Winter Olympics in 1956, Nowadays Olympic type skiing is not required and Cortina has a reputation for more eating and drinking that actually slope hitting.
Most slope so are intermediate levels and it is a great resort for beginners. However, most visitors like to sit around and take in eh magnificent views that the resort provides. With the stunning Dolomites as a backdrop Cortina is located 160km from Venice and 130km from Treviso Cortina attracts the more upmarket sightseers and day-trippers from Milan and Rome. The centre of the town is car free and full of exclusive boutiques and art galleries.
Cortina suffers from an erratic snowfall; however there is plenty of snowmaking to allow skiing to continue.
There are not many challenges for the experts here, but the nursery area is one of the best of the Italian ski resorts. Cross Country skiing is also exceptional here with 75km of trails that are suitable for all levels of ability.
Dining is a big deal here, as most people come to dine rather than ski, so restaurants are abundant, however, booking is advisable. Nightlife is popular as well with plenty of wine bars, to entertain the well heeled Italians, and the discos fire up later in the night.
Lots of fun can be had for Olympic wannabes as Cortina still has the Olympic Bob sled run, and Olympic ski jump as well as tobogganing and sleigh rides.
