Despite sounding like a bad dose of tooth decay, Disentis is a hidden gem for skiers of all abilities, but most notably for it’s free skiing and ski touring opportunities. The ski area has nine lifts spanning altitudes from 1200 metres up to 2800 meters and servicing 60 kilometres of pistes on 15 groomed slopes. However the real beauty of the skiing is the chance to strap on some “fat boys” and experience off-piste skiing in snorkel deep powder.
The region of Disentis / Sedrun boasts the source of the Rhine at Tomasee and the large Benedictine monastery, which is credited as being one of Europe’s oldest. Currently there is construction going on of the world’s largest tunnel (57 kilometres) that will provide easy railway access to the area and no doubt further increase the region’s popularity.
Accommodation is limited to a hotel that is curiously described as “uncomplicated”, a budget hostel and a castle-style hotel that prides itself on being children friendly.
