Established in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, Gulmarg was a mountain resort in the beautiful state of Kashmir, which was a favourite of Emperor Jehangir. This mountain has one more jewel on its crown. The highest green 18-hole golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 metres, is also in this area at the foot of Mount Apharwat.
The summit here is at 4000 meters and the vertical drop is 1350 metres. There are 3 kilometres of trails. One of the popular downhill trails is 15 km long located at an altitude of 4300 metres.
The valley of Gulmarg is a large meadow about 3 sq km at an altitude of 2.370 metres. Due to the high altitude, avalanches are a threat. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering
Activities here include skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, Paragliding, White water rafting, water skiing and trekking through the beautiful meadows around the park. The Winter Games 2008 and 2009 were conducted in Gulmarg Ski resort.
