Apart from downhill skiing, Macedonia offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and plenty of facilities for snowboarders. The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, as it is officially called, is a small country in Southeastern Europe with decent mountains, blessed with a ski season of almost six months a year. (The ski season runs from December to the end of May.) Skiing is a popular sport in Macedonia and with the locals being the main visitors of the ski resorts, long lines on the weekends and quiet slopes on weekdays can be expected. The infrastructure may not be up to European standards yet, but the country definitely has potential.
Two big skiing events, the Shara Mountain Cup and the Mavrovo Memorial Tournament, are organized every year to promote skiing in Macedonia. One of Macedonia’s most popular ski resorts is located at a stone’s throw from the country’s capital, Skopje, allowing tourists to combine their skiing holiday with sightseeing and culture. Macedonia will also prove itself attractive to those on a budget, as the prices for food and accommodation are still low. |
